Akureyri and Surroundings
Coming to Akureyri, the north of Iceland will be a
pleasant surprise with landscape so different from what you have
experienced in the south and around the capital.
Glacial valleys
High mountains surround Eyjafjörður, Icelands's longest fjord
with the town of Akureyri set right at the foot of the hills by the
sea. Glacial valleys and the coastline provide good land for the
many farms that are thriving here. Interesting historical
sites are dotted around the area.
The town of Akureyri with a population of 17.200 is the
administrative and cultural centre of northern Iceland. The
university town has numerous museums, theatre, art galleries,
interesting architecture and more. A walk through the
northernmost botanical garden in the summer is a must and generally
the town boast of lush vegetation giving it a special atmosphere
any time of the year.
Colourful houses
Autumn is particularly beautiful, when the nature starts
changing colours. Colourful houses stand out as the snow covers the
land during winter months. Visit to the old part of the town with
its 19th-early 20th century architecture will tell
you its own rich history.
On a 4-hour tour you get a glimpse into Akureyri and the
surrounding countryside. If weather permits we may take a drive up
to the hills above Akureyri from where on a clear day we can enjoy
marvelous views over the town, the surrounding mountains, the fjord
and all the way out to the open sea.
Icelandic country home/farm
We visit one of the valleys of Eyjafjörður (in winter the
destination may depend on weather and road conditions). Apart from
enjoying the beautiful nature we will also visit a typical
Icelandic country home/farm, have light refreshments and a
possibility for a close look at a some of the
Icelandic domestic animals.
