After a short drive through the old part of Akureyri and through the very centre of this charming town we continue north along the Eyjafjörður, the longest fjord in Iceland through the fertile farming land. We can enjoy the views of high mountains and valleys formed by ice-age glaciers. On the way we pass Möðruvellir, a place of great importance in the past, and where we will see a typical countryside church from the 19th century.
Further along the fjord we get the view of Hrísey island which is a real bird sanctuary and has population of about 200. Though this far out in the fjord Hrisey Island is actually a part of Akureyri municipality.
After a great scenic view of the mountains surrounding Svarfaðardalur valley we arrive into the small fishing village of Dalvík (fun fact: Google recently named their virtual machine (VM) in Google's Android operating system Dalvík) The scenic road takes us to the short one-lane tunnel and to Ólafsfjörður, a village surrounded by high mountains.
From there we continue to through the new tunnel that opened a way into the remote Héðinsfjörður which until last year had only been accessible from the sea or by hiking accross the mountains. A scenic photo stop will be made in the valley before we continue through the second tunnel.
We arrive in Siglufjörður which was the most important and lively fishing town at the peak of the herring area. We will get a glimpse into this period and a feeling for the atmosphere of those days by visiting the Herring museum.
Although the return trip is the same way in this Day Tour, yet we get a completely deferent view as we drive back south to Akureyri.
