The Iceberg Town

Ilulissat (Jakobshavn), in the north of Greenland, has become one of Greenland's biggest tourist destinations with its awe-inspiring scenery and dramatic sounds of glaciers breakingoff into the sea.

The 56 km long Ilulissat Icefjord that is filled with enormous icebergs from the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere, Sermeq Kujalleq, is locatedin the center of Disco Bay and is on UNESCO's World Heritage List.

Just a couple of kilometres from Ilulissat the idyllic Sermermiut valley lies out towards the ice fjord.

The "SledDog Town"

From Ilulissat several tourist offices organise excursions and tours to the settlement of Oqaatsut/Rodebay, to Eqi glacier, where it is possible to spend a couple of days in a hut, and to oneof the oldest settlements í Greenland, Ilimanaq, south of Ilulissat Icefjord. Ilulissat, where there are 4,500 people living today and at least 3,500 sled dogs, is also known as the "SledDog Town" and dog sled trips are highly popular among tourists. 

The Air Iceland's Dash-8 aircrafts fly to Ilulissat from Reykjavik twice a week in July and August.
