Isafjordur

Great place in Iceland to visit

This lovely town with a population of around 3000 is the capital of the Westfjords region and Europe's largest westernmost town. This region is perhaps the most remote and ruggedly beautiful of the entire country, an area where the sun disappears below the horizon for three months of the year.

Proud and independent by nature, the local community supports a lively arts and music scene. This is a town that has given the country two presidents.  The area has also written itself into the history books for its association with witchcraft in the 16th century.

Take a stroll about this elegant town

Isafjordur is steeped in history and for centuries it was a major centre of commerce and trading, all based on fish. Take a stroll about this elegant town and enjoy its rich architecture. You'll find the country's oldest dwelling here, along with other fine examples of timber houses built by wealthy foreign traders in the 18th century.

The town has a fine camping site, hotel, a golf course, swimming pool, restaurants and even an art gallery of some renown.

Boat trip to the nearby island of Vigur

Isafjordur is the perfect starting point for those wanting to explore Iceland off the beaten track. For the bird watchers there's the possibility of a boat trip to the nearby island of Vigur.
And for the truly adventurous, why not have a boat ferry you to the remote and spectacular Hornstrandir area and then pick you up again at an arranged time.
